How to Create a Duotone Effect in Photoshop
A recent branding project has me hooked on the duotone effect once again and with good reason. It can really transform somewhat ordinary images into dynamic and engaging imagery.
Traditionally, duotone is a halftone replication using a superimposed image with another contrasting colour. These days a few steps in photoshop and you can have the effect immediately. Contrasting and monochromatic colours always work the best in my opinion. So have a look at the colour wheel and pick some colour combinations.
1. Choose an image you like, preferably one with a high resolution and a large amount of white space and open it up in photoshop.
2. Then select:
NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER>
3. In the properties panel a box will appear like this:
then double click the colour panel. This will prompt the gradient editor to appear.
4. In the gradient editor double click the bottom spray can icons which will prompt the colour picker to appear then choose your colours.
5. In your adjustments panel you can change the levels to get your desired effect and voila you're done!
